Counting the Grains

Students in 2nd grade are reading “One Grain of Rice”, a mathematical folktale, this week in their reading class.  In this story, a servant named Rani is rewarded for saving rice by the Raja of her providence.  This raja was at one time a good leader, that is until famine hit.  Instead of sharing the rice as promised, he kept it all for himself.  Rani saves rice falling from a basket and is rewarded.  Her request was a simple one or so the raja thought.  All she asked for was one grain of rice, then each day for thirty days it be doubled.  What started with one grain of rice turned into more than one billion grains of rice.  Students here are seeing just how many grains of rice adds up real quick.
