Baseball season began last weekend for the Rich Hill Tigers as they competed in the first WEMO Conference Tournament. The boys in blue met up with the Adrian Blackhawks in their first game.
Result: RH 10 – Adrian 4
Jacob Thompson was the starting pitcher. He struck out 5 batters in 3 innings allowing 3 runs on 1 hit. Coach Andula reports that Thompson was wild but effective. Andrew Schmitt replaced Thompson in the 4th inning striking out 3 in 3 innings and allowing 1 run on 1 hit. Most of Adrian’s offense was due to walks and errors on the part of the Tigers.
Offensively the Tigers scored 5 runs in the first inning, adding two more in the 2nd. Mark Kailbourn hit a 2 run homer in the 4th, and the Tigers added one more in the final inning. Kailbourn and Riley Cameron combined to knock in 7 of our 10 runs in the game. Jacob Thompson, DeLozier, Courter, Cameron and Kailbourn each scored 2 runs.
Game 2 vs Archie
Result RH 2 – Archie 15
The game started out on a promising note with the Tigers taking the lead in the 1st inning when Cameron knocked in Thompson, but it went downhill from there. Courter, DeLozier, and Kailbourn all pitched for the Tigers in this game and all struggled to throw strikes. Archie earned very few of their runs as the Tigers gave up most via walks, errors, or mental lapses on the field.
Offensively the Tigers hit the ball well, but just weren’t able to get hits to fall. Archie also made mistakes defensively but they rarely occurred when the Tigers had runners on base. Overall, this is a matchup that is much more even than the results would indicate and Coach Andula stated that he thinks everyone is looking forward to playing them more throughout the season.
Game 3 vs Osceola
Result: RH 15 – Osceola 3
Jacob Thompson and Andrew Schmitt pitched this game for the Tigers as well. Thompson started off strong but was clearly worn out a couple of innings in due to coming back on short rest after throwing so many pitches the night before. He struck out 2 in 2 and 1/3 innings before Schmitt took his place. He came in and was nearly unhittable, striking out 4 in 2 and 2/3 innings.
Offensively the Tigers were dominant. Thompson went 2 for 2 and scored 4 runs, DeLozier worked 4 walks and scored 2 runs, Courter went 2 for 3, scored 3 runs and batted in 3, and Cameron went 2 for 4, scored 2 runs, and knocked in 4 more. Kailbourn also knocked in two more runs in this game. Currently Cameron and Kailbourn are 1st and 2nd in the conference in RBI with 8 and 6 respectively.
The Tigers took 2nd place in the first ever WEMO Conference Baseball Tournament. Archie took 1st place after knocking off Adrian 8-5.
