The Finals of District 13 Basketball Tournament played before one of the largest crowds in Rich Hill History. The new Tiger Dome was filled to capacity with standing room only. Many fans had decided to come almost an hour and half early just to make sure they got a seat and they were not disappointed. The Rich Hill High School Chamber Choir led by Katie Curtwright opened the evening with the National Anthem.
The first basketball match of the evening was the girls’ championship contest between Adrian and Jasper. What made this an unusual contest is that the Blackhawks and Rich Hill Tigers student cheering sections joined forces to support both WEMO conference teams in their quest for championships. In an upset the Lady Blackhawks defeated the Jasper Eagles to make their way to the sectionals at Clinton on Wednesday night.
In the second game of the evening the Rich Hill Tigers met the Lockwood Tigers for the boys championship. This was a rematch of last year’s double overtime game which the Rich Hill boys won. In the first quarter both teams came out strong offensively showing little signs of nerves and Rich Hill led 20-17 after the first quarter. In the second quarter both offenses stayed in tune and at the half Rich Hill led 38-33. In the second half Rich Hill was able to strengthen their defense and keep the offensive pace high and led 56-45. The fourth quarter saw the boys stretching their lead and and hitting free throws to win the game with a score of 75-57.
The noise in the Tiger Dome was deafening when the final horn sounded. The boys completed their home record undefeated with this final win at home. They will now head to Clinton on Wednesday night at 7:45 to meet Skyline in the sectional round of the playoffs.
Scoring for the Tigers: Blaine Robb 26, Bryant Courter 20, Cole Heckadon 13, Jacob Mumma 9, Aadin Humble 4 and Alec Gray 3. The Rich Hill boy’s record now stands at 28-0.
