Boy’s Basketball Home Opener

The Rich Hill Tigers opened their season with a JV boys game againstthe Lone Jack Mules. The opening  game was only a two quarter affair . The younger Tigers got off to a slow start and found themselves in a deep hole right from the start. They would never recover and were handed a 15 point loss. The JV though found some bright spots to lead into future games. They are young with very limited experience but a great determination to learn. They have good team chemistry and good understanding of the game. As the season progresses they are expect to improve greatly and will win their share of games.

The boys varsity Tigers also began their season on Thursday with the last game of the evening. This year’s edition of the Tigers would enter the game with only one true returning starter so there would be a lot of unknowns in the opening game of the season. The team will consist of 12 players that Coach Moles feels has a lot of potential.

The game opened  on the slow side for the Tigers and seeing the visitors taking an early lead and  extending it only to see the Tigers fight back to a trail 11-14 at the end of the first quarter. As you might expect the game was uneven in the tempo in the early going. Both teams committing numerous turnovers and foul trouble keeping both benches rotating players. The Tigers seemed to find a better rhythm in the second quarter and were able to obtain the lead before the half-time at  27-26.

The third quarter started with both teams losing players to foul trouble and both coach having to work hard at keeping the right players on the floor. The Rich Hill bench came through for Coach Moles and were able to extend the lead by a bucket and maintain a lead until the starters could return during the fourth frame. After three quarters the Tigers led 40-37. In the final frame both teams came to life offensively and seemed to score in bunches. In the end the Tigers had more firer power this evening to out score their opponents 27-20. When the fourth quarter ended the Tigers had defeated Lone Jack by a score of 67-57.

One of the main difference for winning the game was in the second half the Tigers were able to limit their number of turnovers to just 4. As the game went along the team picked each other up and their confidence began to grow. Their next game will be Monday night as the varsity girls and boys travel to Kansas City Lutheran for  a double header.

The Tigers had four players in double figures and two other players with nine and seven points respectively. As a team the boys had 33 rebounds and 7 assist, they also committed 18 turnovers
