Local Rivalry – Rich Hill vs. Hume Varsity Boys

On Tuesday night the annual rivalry game between the Rich Hill Tigers and the Hume
Hornets took place on the home court of the Tigers. This yearly game brought out a
nice crowd from both schools, which always makes for a great atmosphere for a high
school basketball game. This Rivalry has a long history and most fans in the crowd
could probably share one or more stories about their memories of past games played
between these two programs.
The evening started off with a half JV Boys game. The Junior Tigers had experienced a
rather long layoff but were ready to go with the opening tip off. The offense from both
teams started off slowly for the evening. The Tigers were able to get the offense going
and found a stride that carried them to a 10-6 lead after the first quarter. Since the
teams were only playing two quarters both teams looked to improve on their
performance and make the most of their playing time. As the second frame started the
Hornets came to life offensively and tighten up their defense which caused the Tigers
some problems. The Tigers allowed the Hornets to control the boards which in the end
hurt them. The Tigers found themselves trailing by five points with about a minute to
play but were able to drop a trey in to close the gap. The Tigers then tighten the
defense and were able to give themselves a chance to tie the game at the end of
regulation. With fifteen seconds left the Tigers took a time out and set their strategy
for the last shot. Coming out of the timeout the Tigers worked the clock down but an
errant pass ended their hopes of a final shot. The final score was the Rich Hill Tigers 15
Hume Hornets 17. It was a disappointing loss for the JV who saw their record drop to
0-3 in their young season.
In the final game of the evening the Varsity Tigers took the floor looking to rebound
from a tough loss on Saturday against the Midway Vikings. Both teams came into the
game looking very different from last year with very few starters returning for either
squad. In the early going the Tigers came out very aggressively on defense trying to
apply pressure on the Hume Hornets. They were successful in forcing numerous
turnovers and then converting them into points. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead
but had to deal with Hume’s quick guards. The first frame saw several Hornets go to
the bench with foul trouble which was partly due to Rich Hill offensively attacking the
basket. After one quarter the Tigers led the Hornets 23-7. In the second quarter the
Tigers continued to apply pressure and extend their lead before the half. In this quarter
the Tigers also fell prey to foul trouble watch some of their own players heading to the
bench. The bench provided much needed help and at the half Rich Hill had limited
Hume to only three field goals and led at the half 43-15. The second half started
favorably for the Tigers who were able to extend the lead to more than thirty points but
again foul trouble limited some of the playing time for the starters but Coach Moles
used his bench freely during the second half. As the third quarter came to a close RichHill led 57-29. The final frame found the Tiger using almost exclusively their bench
giving much needed playing time to the young players. The final score of the evening
was Rich Hill 67 Hume 42. For the game the Tigers had three players finished in double
figures and saw their record improve to 3-4 before the Christmas break. Their next
action will be January 2 at home against the Adrian Blackhawks. It will be the opening
game for the conference season for both teams.
