All games scheduled for tonight Wednesday, January 23, have been moved to Friday, January 25. The games that were originally scheduled for Friday night will now be played Saturday morning, in the west gym, starting at 11:00 am. Updated brackets will be posted on the Tiger Athletics page as soon as they are available.
The second round of the boys Appleton City Tournament took place on Thursday night
with the Rich Hill Tigers making their fifth trip in a row to the semi-finals. Their
opponent for the evening would be the Knights from Northeast Vernon County. The
Tigers had punched their ticket with a win over the Hume Hornets and the Knights had
advanced with an upset win over the third seeded Appleton City Bulldogs.
In the first quarter both teams found their offenses moving up and down the court
quickly and with a fair amount of success. Neither team was going to blink or be
intimidated by the other and at the end of one quarter the Rich Hill Tigers found them
holding a slime one point lead over the Knights at 16-15. What looked like a game that
could be a close game all night took a turn for the Tigers as they started to apply a
more effective defensive pressure on the NEVC team and were able to turn turnovers
into several points The Knights seemed to have no answer for the Tigers pressure and
saw the lead grow quickly to double digits by the end of the first half. At the half the
Tigers lead by a score of 38-24.
At half time Rich Hill coaches made some defensive adjustments which proved to pay
dividends with their team as the second half started. Early in the third quarter the
Tigers strengthened their defensive capabilities and saw their lead grow to more than
thirty points again using turnovers to create their offensive points from transition shots.
At the four minute mark of the quarter Coach Moles went to his bench to finish out the
frame and at the end of three Rich Hill lead the Knights by a score of 59-29. The fourth
quarter started with a running clock but NEVC was not about to let it run without doing
their best to get it back under thirty and were able to do so. The starters for the Tigers
spent most of the second half on the bench but the younger players were up to the
task and put in some valuable minutes of experience and kept the defensive pressure
on while running good offense to finish the game out. It was a good night for the
Tigers with the final score being Rich Hill 64 NEVC 36. With this victory it moved the
Tigers into the Championship game against the Montrose Blue Jays who defeated
Chilhowee in the last game of the evening. In the game that was to be played on
Saturday night the #2 seeded Tigers were to the Blue Jays that were the top seed of
the tournament. Due to weather this game has been postponed to a later date that will
be announced when a suitable date and time can be found.
The Tigers found their season record improved to 6-5 and are now on a three game
winning streak. For the game the Tigers found seven players in the scoring column with
four of those in double figures. The next week schedule will find the Tigers at home on
Tuesday night against the Midway Vikings who are 1-0 this year against Rich Hill. On
Thursday night the Eldorado Springs Bulldogs will come to town for a boy’s night only. This again will be a ½ JV boys game with the varsity to follow. On Friday night the girls and boys will travel to Sherwood.
Round two of the rivalry between the Rich Hill Tigers and the Hume Hornets took place
during the first round of the 2019 Appleton City Tournament. The Tigers came into the
game with a 4-5 and coming off a nice win against Osceola last Friday night at home.
The Hume Hornets entered the game with a record of 2-10 but with this rivalry records
really don’t matter to the players or the fans.
